Elarton had season-ending surgery on his shoulder to repair his labrum. This is the second surgery on Elarton's shoulder since 2002. The team is hoping to have him back by mid-June, although admit that could be pushing it.

Analysis: Elarton was the Royals opening day starter after signing a two-year, $8 million contract as a free agent. He was placed on the disabled list on July 18 after going 4-9 with a 5.34 ERA in 20 starts. Manager Buddy Bell said Elarton could start throwing off a flat surface in four months and off the mound in December.
