Hardy will have season-ending surgery on his ankle as soon as Thursday. The Milwaukee shortstop has been on the disabled list since May 17 after severely spraining his right ankle in a play at home plate. Hardy saw a foot specialist on Monday and it was determined that the injury would only heal with an operation. "We figured this was going to happen the way things were going," Brewers manager Ned Yost said. "It got to a point when rehab wasn't getting it done." (Updated 7/19/2006) Analysis: Hardy will likely need three to four months to recover after the surgery. He batted .242 with five homers and 14 RBIs in 35 games this season.
