The Los Angeles Angels optioned Mathis to Triple-A Salt Lake Wednesday and recalled catcher Mike Napoli to replace him on the 25-man roster. Mathis, one of the top catching prospects in the game, was batting .103 (4-for-39) in 12 games this season, including a home run and two RBIs. He had gone hitless in his last 16 at-bats.
