Marshall Faulk
Faulk will have major reconstructive knee surgery and be sidelined for the 2006 season. The 33-year-old running back hasn't participated in the Rams' minicamps this year and had been contemplating retirement before news of his latest surgery. "We were hoping for the best, but we've been planning for both scenarios," said Rams first-year coach Scott Linehan. "I think reality is setting in for sure that potentially his career is winding down."

Analysis: Faulk, the 2000 NFL MVP, had lesser surgery on both knees earlier this year and it was unclear which knee would undergo surgery this time around. Linehan said the team will keep Faulk on the roster. The seven-time Pro Bowl selection is ninth on the career rushing list with 12,279 yards and was the first player in NFL history to gain 2,000 yards from scrimmage in four straight seasons from 1998-2001. He had a career-low 292 yards last season, however, and made one start.
